My name is Mark J. Bowyer, and I’m located in Northern Michigan by way of The Pacific Northwest. I have lived in the small town of Frankfort, Michigan since 2005, following a 25+ year career in television. I’m currently the CEO/Executive Director of a home help care agency, caring for people with developmental disabilities and mental illness.

I began creating what I call patchwork drawings when I was quite young. I would either draw shapes randomly, or in the case with this piece, I would have a subject or topic that I translate to art.

Originally I began coloring in the spaces with crayons, colored pencils or felt markers. A few years ago I thought I would try to do the same type of creations on canvas with paint, but I couldn’t quite get the sharp edges I wanted with a brush. That’s when I discovered both water and oil based paint pens and markers. This allows me to be more precise in my shading.

I’ve always liked using bright vibrant colors in my artwork. I like how even in low light it seems brighter than the setting it’s in. I’ve said to others before that I’m attracted to the use of bright colors, probably due to my background in television. It reminds me of the glow of a television screen or monitor in a darkly lit room. When I begin an abstract painting I usually think about what contrasts I want to bring out.

My favorite colors usually are shades of green, but I love the contrast of ultra bright colors.

I tend to lay down the darker colors first and then layer lighter and brighter colors over the top of the dark colors.

I have been using different techniques in order to obtain interesting contrasts in my art.

I’m attracted to the use of bright colors, probably due to my background in television. It reminds me of the glow of television set.
